Honda 400ex Carburetor Float Adjustment
- Buy Caltric Carburetor Compatible With Honda Trx250Ex Trx 250Ex Sportrax 250 2001-2005 W/Throttle Cable: Parts. The idle setting is MUCH better as it is easy to reach and has a finger knob for adjustment. All I did was move the idle setting about 1/4 turn and that was it. Started up the first time and purred. I will definitely purchase.
- Carburetor jetting can be easily understood if we understand the basic principles of carburetor and engine operation. A carburetor mixes fuel with air before it goes into the engine. When the mixture is correct the engine runs well. The bottom line is a carburetor must be adjusted to deliver fuel and air to the engine at a precise ratio.
- To get the best fuel efficiency, as well as power, the carburetor on your Honda engine needs to be adjusted to provide the optimum performance. Due to weather conditions and use, the carburetor adjustments can change, requiring them to be readjusted. Operating the Honda engine with the wrong adjustment settings can also cause damage to the engine.
Pilot Screw Adjustment for the Recon 250 ('97 and up)
This may also be suitable information for the same year 250SX quad.
Note:
-The pilot screw is factory pre-set. Adjustment is not necessary unless the carburetor is overhauled or new pilot screws are installed.
-The engine must be warm for accurate adjustment. Ten minutes of stop-and-go riding is sufficient.
-Use a tachometer with gradations of 50 rpm or smaller that will accurately indicate 50 rpm change.
1. Turn the pilot screw clockwise until it seats lightly, then back it out to the specification given.
CAUTION: Damage to the pilot screw seat will occur if the pilot screw is tightened against the seat.

The pilot screw is on the front center underneath side close to the engine cylinder.
The above info. was taken from Honda's '97-'04 Recon service manual, and I hope this helps many. Print it out, and get it covered with your greasy fingerprints, and then throw it away!
I do not have a tach or a pilot screw wrench, but I do have ears and a screwdriver. I used these baseline settings to dial my wife's bike in perfectly. You can too.

I just bought a 2007 400ex used and when I got the the previous owner had twisted the idle screw pretty bad and the quad was stuck idling kinda high. The quad had run wonderfully before I replaced the cable. Anyways, after replacing the cable I try to start it up and it wont turn over when choked. Then I turn the choke off it starts with much hesitation and when it finally does it sounds horrible with tons of backfiring almost popping/ grinding noises. I turned it off right away so that I didn't dig myself into an even deeper hole.
After that I checked the oil and it looked fine but the pipe was SUPER hot. I think it might be getting way to much air and not enough fuel. First off where is the air/fuel screw and which way should I turn it to give it more fuel? I've heard all the way in and 3 turns out is a good starting point but I really have know idea what I'm talking about lol. Thanks a lot any help would be greatly appreciated!
